* Hot Damn Tamales! continues its evolution from storefront gourmet tamale shop to full-on restaurant. In addition to lunch, HDT! now serves $5 tapas on Friday and Saturday night, accompanied by live music and a sangria/beer/wine bar. The menu rotates each week. Last week’s featured several potato dishes like causa and papas bravas. Owner Ione Stavron has also started a Sunday brunch buffet for $19.95 a person. Check their website for brunch items, which also rotate. 713 W Magnolia Ave., (817) 926-9909.
* The king of all BBQ, Daniel Vaughn, revisited Tim Love’s Woodshed Smokehouse to try out the brisket, which Love recently added to the menu. Other reviews this week include the Fort Worth Weekly’s take on Baker’s Ribs and the Original Fried Pie Shop in Weatherford and the Star-Telegram’s Andrew Marton digs the new dinner service at Ryan’s Fine Grocer and Deli. Check out Ryan’s new dinner menu here.
* Fort Worth, Texas magazine did a fun round-up of 28 local cocktails, singling out summer ‘freshments at Grace, Waters, Bayou Jacks and others. Great photos from Jason Kindig.* The Bearded Lady, a new spot in the Near Southside area, is slated to open July 12 in a beautifully restored home at 1229 Seventh Ave. at W. Magnolia. And what will they serve? Cheffy food, craft beer and cheffy food made with craft beer, of course! Kitchen will be open ’til 2am nightly, giving the area its first seven-day-a-week late-night dining option.
* The seventh Tortilleria La Nueva de Zacatecas recently opened at McCart and Alta Mesa. Open 7am to 7pm daily for breakfast and lunch (chicharrón, barbacoa tongue, cheek, goat, breakfast tacos). Corn and flour tortillas are made on-site. I love the flour – they’re lower in calories than most (100, while most other flour tortillas are 125 and up). Grab some to-go. They’re packaged and sold by the pound. 817-361-6001.
